Fernando Pullum Community Arts Center Earns a Four-Star Rating From Charity Navigator

Fernando Pullum Community Arts Center ("Pullum Center") is proud to announce that its strong financial health and ongoing accountability and transparency has earned a Four-Star Rating from Charity Navigator. This rating designates Pullum Center as an official "Give with Confidence" charity, indicating that our organization is using donations effectively based on Charity Navigator's criteria.Â

South Los Angeles, CA - The California Arts Council has announced a grant award of $50,000 to Fernando Pullum Community Arts Center ("Pullum Center") as part of its General Operating Support Grant program during its 2023 grant cycle.Â

Fernando Pullum Honored with Artist for Action Humanitarian Award

South Los Angeles, CA - On December 7, 2023, Fernando Pullum was honored with the first Artist for Action (AFA) Chapin/Kragen/Belafonte Humanitarian Award in recognition of his advocacy work. Other honorees include Bill Lavin, Founder of Where Angels Play Foundation, and Bill Ayers, Co-Founder of Why Hunger. Â

California Arts Council Supports the Pullum Center

Pullum Center Jazz Band Performs at the CA Jazz Foundation Gala
The Pullum Center Jazz Band played at the California Jazz Foundation Gala on April 30, 2022, at the Omni Los Angeles Hotel. The gala honored Don Was, a triple Grammy-winning music producer and President of the iconic Blue Notes Records, and John Clayton, a saxophone and flute player, jazz educator, Co-Founder of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, and a touring musician with Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Ray Charles, Lena Horne and B.B. King.
New Mural
A new mural featuring Count Basie, Cab Calloway and John Coltrane was added to the Pullum Center building in celebration on Black History month in 2022.
'Sound of Us' Screening
Fernando Pullum and Micah Heard attended a screening of Sound of Us in Costa Mesa, CA. Sound of Us is a film about the magic of music. The film includes on-camera comments from our very own Fernando, Micah, and Ian.

Graduating seniors awarded scholarships

On September 11, 2021, the Jazz Band and the Junior Jazz Band performed for a national audience of musicians, community leaders, and music suppliers at the National Black Musicians Coalition Community Summit Series Musicians for Change at Lynwood, California. Shari Belanfonte was the MC. Each of our three graduating seniors received a $1,000 scholarship for their first year of college and a pledge of $1,000 per year thereafter. They will also receive internships at Sweetwater Music and National Black Musicians Coalition.
FPCAC's response to the coronavirus outbreak

In response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, Fernando Pullum Community Arts Center (FPCAC) will be closed from March 12 - 26, 2020. No classes or performances will be held during this time.
Please also note that our musical production Mulan is also being postponed.
FPCAC will continue to monitor the situation and determine if further cancellation is needed.

Fernando Pullum named 'Educator of the Year'

Fernando Pullum was honored as Educator of the Year by Scholarship Audition Performance Preparatory Academy (SAPPA). The event was hosted by actor/producer Dave Fennoy and featured Garrett Morris, Barbara Morrison and Glynn Turman. SAPPA, founded by jazz legend Billy Mitchell, provides music workshops for L.A. communities lacking music education opportunities, and it acts as a resource center for music scholarships, competitions and programs.
